The Day the Music Died

Richardson a.k.a The Big Bopper. Bisa jadi karena 3 artis yang mempunyai nama besar tewas sekaligus secara bersamaan maka gelagat pesimistik langsung menyeruak di banyak orang seolah serentak menyimpulkannya sebagai: the day the music died.

The Day the Music Died alias hari kiamatnya musik, wih, serem amat…

Richardson a.k.a. The Big Bopper.

Oleh majalah Rolling Stone, pria bernama asli Charles Hardin Holley ini diposisikan di nomer 13 deretan “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”.

Sementara Ritchie Valens meraih pengakuan dunia—termasuk Indonesia—salah satunya lewat lagu La Bamba. Come On Let’s Go.

Monumen The Day the Music Died

Sebutan The Day the Music Died sendiri pertama kali secara resmi dideklarasikan oleh Don McLean dalam lagunya, American Pie.

Coba perhatikan liriknya

A long, long time ago…
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while.

But february made me shiver
With every paper I’d deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn’t take one more step.

I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died

Don McLean saya pikir mungkin agak terlalu pesimistik. Don tak sepenuhnya benar. Sebab sampai hari ini musik masih tegak menjulang digjaya (well, di Indonesia industri rekaman agak peyot sedikit sih gara-gara maraknya pembajakan, but it’s still alright, pretty much). Apalagi Michael Schenker Group, menolak pernyataan itu dan menganggap musik (Rock) baik-baik saja—tak akan pernah mati, malah—lalu berteriak lantang di album terbitan 1983 Built to Destroy, ROCK WILL NEVER DIE!!!
