WHAM! BANG! YOU’RE DEAD, MAN!: SOUNDTRACKS OF LAST-KISS GOODBYE

Today is the 1st anniversary of BlokRokinBeats. Each and every person who participated/doing exhibition before, was asked to pick one song with special theme: a track that they would use for their funeral, soundtrack of their last-kiss goodbye, song to overdose to, farewell-and-wish-you-well (or hell), a solid calibre of “danse macabre”.

The Playlist:

01. Rollin’ Over – The Small Faces [as chosen by David Tarigan]
Saya pernah mendapat pertanyaan serupa sebelumnya, jadi ngejawabnya cukup mudah. Idealnya mungkin pemakaman saya diiringi oleh lagu himne favorit seperti “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow” atau “Each Step I Take”, tetapi tembakan terakhirnya milik The Small Faces.

Goodbye sunshine I’m on my way
I’ll be long time gone by the break of day
Tell everyone that I’m gonna find it
There ain’t nothin’ gonna stop me
Rollin’ over!

02. Kosong – Pure Saturday [Bin Harlan]

03. Time Waits for No One – The Rolling Stones [Soleh Solihun]

Time can tear down a building
Or destroy a woman’s face
Hours are like diamonds
Don’t let them waste
And time waits for no one
No favors has he
Time waits for no one
And he won’t wait for me

04. Into the Deep – Kula Shaker [Robi Navicula]

05. Tonight is Forever – Acid House King [Eric Wirjanata]
The song that I hope my family know this song, and ask someone good to perform this during my funeral—which I hope not gonna happen anytime soon… (during my 80th or 90th would be cool, but not on 20, 30, 40, 50 or 60).
Enjoy the pop.

The Pogues | Island Records.

06. The Sunny Side of the Street – The Pogues [Rudolf Dethu]
The end is the beginning is the end. It began and would end here: on the sunny side of the street—put a bottle of good whiskey and black brogues shoes next to my grave, please.

This song itself is an up-tempo celebration of an unrepentant libertine—I’m Balinese, death is a joyous occasion, it enables the soul to be free from the shackles of the body.

07. One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell – Morrissey [Paulus Panggabean]

Always be careful
When you abuse the one you love
The hour or the day
No one can tell
But one day

Goodbye will be farewell, and
You will never see the one you love again
You will never see the one you love again

This an unhappily and bitterly beautiful song that I definitely play on my funeral for them who are lucky to have people who love them yet don’t treat them right.

08. Beautiful Life (Indra7 “WBYDM” Re-edit) – Gui Boratto [Indra7]

Let’s have some fun. It’s a FUNeral Party!

Dirgahayu The Block Rockin’ Beats! Semua yang terbaik untukmu.

Mari bersulang \m/

09. Deserter – Matthew Dear [Marlowe Bandem]
When the time comes to turn off your mind, do relax, stay afloat in all honesty and embark without pause – as we all are deserters of heaven.

Lost and alone
The world around you gone perverted
Don’t be afraid
This is what you’ve been saving for …

Damian Marley & Nas | Urban Islandz

10. Road to Zion – Damian Marley ft. Nas [Dedi Kristian]

Lagu pengantar sampai di Zion. Akhir. Surga.

“Got to keep on burning, on the road to Zion”, lirik ini membuat saya ikhlas sedikit terima derita, sebelum sampai Zion. Disana ada yang menunggu (“Jah will be waiting there”).

11. Asmaradhana 388 – Kill The DJ ft. Soimah Poncowati [Marzuki Mohammad]

12. Pergi Tanpa Pamit – Nina Kirana [Nona Sari]
Awalnya sepertinya lagu perpisahan romantis seperti “I Wish You Love” versi The Skatalites akan sangat manis, atau lagu favorit yang sangat inspiratif seperti “Move On Up!” dari Curtis Mayfield.

SELAMAT for the 1st anniversary of The Block Rockin’ Beats, sangat menyenangkan mengetahui bahwa tanggal 8 September adalah juga hari ulang tahun Mama saya, semoga The Block Rockin’ Beats jaya!, bisa berjalan langgeng dan terus menginspirasi banyak orang.

13. People Ain’t No Good – Nick Cave [Stuart Wilford]
I wouldn’t say all people are bad but you gotta admit that some just ain’t no good. I recall driving across Australia years ago and my three year old son singing along to this one in the back of the car. It’s not a difficult chorus line but he did know it by heart. As he goes through adolescence I’m noting if it’s had any effect. In the end, my friends, we’re all pretty much the same and there’s only one way to go about it…. you have to live life to the fullest to really find out what it means, don’t sit back waiting for it to happen, get out and grab it while you can.

….ahhhh, that’s just bullshit baby, people just ain’t no good

14. You Will Miss Me When I Burn – Soulsavers [Marcel Thee]
My pick has to be “You Will Miss Me When I Burn” by the Soulsavers ft. Mark Lanegan. Originally sung and written by Will Oldham (under the guise of Palace Brothers), this is a morosely upbeat tune, if there ever was one. On this gloriously recorded minimalist cover, the Soulsavers feature Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees’ fame lending his vocals. Surprisingly his raspy tone sounds a tad more optimistic than Oldham’s fatalistic take on the song.

So, yeah, BlokRokinBeats, we will miss you when you burn into something much more glorious.

15. Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye – Leonard Cohen [Aribowo Sangkoyo]

16. Landslide – Smashing Pumpkins [Ricky Siahaan]
Perpisahan harusnya sederhana namun berkesan. Sensasi menyentuhnya tetap sama kuat. Tipe lagu yang pelan dan cepat merasuk. When my time comes, I’d want this song on the player.

17. Revenge – Danger Mouse/Sparklehourse/David Lynch/The Flaming Lips [Adib Hidayat]

Lirih. Pedih.

Semua lagu berjumlah 13 adalah ciptaan Sparklehourse a.k.a.

18. Old Man – Neil Young [Jason Tedjasukmana]
I would have to nominate Neil Young’s “Old Man”. The song has an appropriate amount of sadness and addresses so many of life’s unrequited issues (or mine, at least) without dwelling on the regrets. Plus, few singers have managed to remain as relevant and real throughout my life as Old Neil. If I could ask anyone to perform at my funeral, I can’t imagine a better choice. If he wasn’t available, then Ebiet G. Ade. Haha.

19. Yellow Ledbetter – Pearl Jam [Athron McCann]
Maaaaaaaaate…. are you serious a year has passed? That’s some crazy shit. Well done on a year long effort though!…. It’s a total headfuck trying to find one track. “This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven” would probably be appropriate for my funeral but I used that track on my playlist for your show last time… some other classic Bungle tracks that are pretty funny but too long.. so.. on more serious note.. the winner is… “Yellow Ledbetter”.

This track has always felt close to home. The fact that it’s impossible to work out Eddie’s lyrics leaves it up to the music and the vocal pattern itself to to take you on a journey. There’s a sadness to it but it still has an uplifting beauty that has always left me smiling. It feels like there’s a pretty story in there that you can take and attach yourself to. As far as being a funeral song goes, sadness that leaves you smiling on reflection is a pretty nice note to leave on for anyone. And Eddie’s only real discernible line is the last repeated line of the track “I don’t want to stay…” Fair call when you’ve skipped the earth haha.

Sweet!

20. All the Little Things (That Make Life Worth Living) – Andy Weatherall [Simon Grigg]
I love Weatherall’s rock/dub/dance mashing. He’s a punk at heart and seems to come from the same sort of place that I do. This track should confuse the older relatives.

His A Pox On The Pioneers was one of my albums of 2009 and the title says it all.

21. Lies – Stabbing Westward [Oddie Octaviadi]
The date is October 23, 2171. I am about 200 yrs old. Thanks to all kinds of advancement in medical technology throughout the human history, immortality has been a reality. I had always thought that I would achieve immortality through a vampire’s bite but, no such luck. But, then in 2017 the Indonesia-Malaysia Genome Joint Initiative managed to crack the codes and able to alter the genetic codes that had been causing degeneration of living cells. I was unaware that I got signed up to be the one of the first few guinea pigs. Me, the immortal, through science.

The upside? Watching people come and go. Youth and vitality preserved. All the time in the world to study things, travel places, know people and listen to millions of songs. The downside? Watching people come and go.

Just by sheer pure dumb luck, on the fateful day of Monday, September 23, 2171, a flying car struck me as I leave my apartment in Mars Colony Sector 13. My jet pack caught fire, I spiraled out of control and crashed onto the a hoover truck carrying a group of Replicants (humanoid robots that work in the mines). My lungs crashed, my skull cracked, my spine severed into 10 pieces, and my robotic arms once again destroyed. Me, the immortal no more.

A month later after the accident, at my funeral, none of my friends nor members of my family showed up. All of them had died of natural causes a century before. Unlike me, they weren’t or were lucky enough to be genetically-altered. Following my will, the funeral home director chooses a music file implanted in the back of my neck (just like the rest of the vital information). Choosing the song was quite a challenge. You see, the funeral home director insisted that the song cannot be longer than 5 minutes. Apparently, the death business is booming, can’t showcase the dead body for too long.

So, one dead lifeless body in a cold metallic room with no tears shed. And the song chosen to send my remains to laser incendiary machine is “Lies” by Stabbing Westward. Why? Because immortality is a lie.

Love you to death.

22. Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd [Edy Khemod]
Congrats for Block Rockin Beats, it’s been a year since you guys gave me hope in radio program, playlist, and songs trading. So many reference that I’ve got over the years following the program. Hope it’ll still be around for my kids to hear.

Anyway… about the “cemetery” songs ….

Every time I think about this topic, I always fall back to this one particular band… Pink Floyd.

They’ve been my influence from early on, since I was 10 years old listening to my brother’s obsessive collection of art rock tapes, with “Yess” labels on it (ahh… those tapes ….)

This song was like the bridging for me, a silly 10 year old kids into the world of strange experimental music that’s so beautiful to me at the time, but I can’t figure out what it’s about. Then when I start reading the lyrics, it’s so surreal yet wondrous.

And for my funeral, asides from the ambience of the song that suited funeral events perfectly, the lyric’s simply make sense.

I wish you, all my friends, will be there at my funeral. If not for me, at least for the joy of gathering.

So, so you think you can tell / Heaven from Hell / Blue skys from pain / Can you tell a green field / From a cold steel rail? / A smile from a veil? / Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade / Your heroes for ghosts? / Hot ashes for trees? / Hot air for a cool breeze? / Cold comfort for change? / And did you exchange / A walk on part in the war / For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here / We’re just two lost souls / Swimming in a fish bowl / Year after year / Running over the same old ground / What have we found? / The same old fears / Wish you were here…

23. Rainbow – Boris [Dedidude]

They’re megagenious!!

24. Mentari – Iwan Abdulrachman [Ucok Homicide]
Deskripsinya mungkin sederhana; Kalimat “hari ini hari milikku, juga esok masih terbentang” sangat-sangat empowering pas jaman digebukin tentara Soeharto. Dan dulu lagu ini pernah jadi semangat waktu jaman saya burn-out. Jadi kepikirannya di pemakaman saya ada anak-anak saya hadir, saya pengen mereka denger lagu ini supaya gak sedih dan go on with their lives, to the fullest. That’s it.

Nick Drake at home with his sister and family | PBS

25. Things Behind The Sun – Nick Drake [Eka Annash]
A stark, desolate and devastatingly beautiful song on the myths and secrets of life and what lies behind it. Taken from Drake’s last (and 3rd) album Pink Moon, released in February 1972, 2 years before his premature death at 26.

A painfully shy, reluctant performer and introverted in his nature, none of his album made significant (and commercial) impact during its release. Which brings more sense of failure and depression on the young, sensitive Drake, whose lyrics bears vision of a man, old before his time, watching the world gone wrong. But throughout the years, Drake’s music and lyrics has played essential role on influencing today’s much respected musician such as Robert Smith (The Cure), Peter Buck (REM), Chris Robinson (The Black Crowes), Lou Barlow (Sebadoh), Badly Drawn Boy, etc

I don’t want any song on my funeral. I want a non hysterical and peaceful surrounding full of prayers. But when my time has come, this is the song I’d like to hear for the last moment of my life.

26. Hurt – Johnny Cash [Ryan Koesuma]
“Hurt” was a Downward Spiral‘s Classic; Rick Rubin’s choice for the late Johnny Cash to cover this song was perfect. Find the music video on youtube and you’ll see why many consider this is Johnny’s epitaph.

27. Farewell and Goodnight – Smashing Pumpkins [Felix Dass]
Semua tinggal versi ‘KW’nya.

28. In My Life – The Beatles [Wendi Putranto]

29. Riding for a Fall – Mad Caddies [Rudeboy Dodix]
There’s nothing particular about this, except this is one of my favorite tunes to finish my DJ set.

Happy Anniversary Block Rockin’ Beats!

Stay Rude Stay Rebel.

30. Talullah – Jamiroquai [Prima Yudhistira]
Kenapa lagu ini saya pilih sebagai lagu perpisahan, hmm, check the lyrics:

Now there’s a hole in my soul
And I’m losing control
I know you’re my magic star
But you’ve gone away and flown too far this time

31. It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over – Lenny Kravitz [Adrian King]
“Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once. Of all the wonders that I yet have heard, it seems to me most strange that men should fear; Seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come” – Shakespeare

“As long as you are not aware of the continual law of Die and Be Again, you are merely a vague guest on a dark Earth” – Goethe

“Live so that you may desire to live again – that is your duty – for in any case you will live again!” – Nietzsche

Keep it real.

32. Stay on These Roads – Midiahn [Otong Koil]
ini lagu tentang cinta abadi
aslinya diciptakan dan disuarakan oleh a-ha
a-ha adalah tempat saya belajar menyanyi
jarang sekali saya milih materi yg saya kerjakan sendiri
tapipak
karena ini funeral untuk saya
sehingga
bila Tuhan mengijinkan
tapiii…
pak

33. Here’s Lookin’ At You, Kid – The Gaslight Anthem [JRX]
This is my funeral/goodbye/O.D song.

34. The Last Song – The Smashing Pumpkins [Sam Bram]
Hopefully soon.

For the bye-bye song I choose this one. This was the last song that I played on my own last radio show, Mtv Sky’s Cutting Edge, after 5 and a half years with more than 250 episodes aired. Cutting Edge was shut down because it was considered not helping on sales. The team shook hands, group hugged, and waved goodbye in 2006. So the song has also a sentimental value to me.

Anyway, heavy birthday to you. Keep rockin’ the motherfukkin’ block!

35. Ladies And Gentlemen We are Floating in Space – Spiritualized [Ridwan Rudianto]

Berjalan tenang menembus layer tanpa pernah menoleh ke belakang karena saya tahu: if you look back, you will go back.

36. My Way – Frank Sinatra [Firman Prasetyo]

Bon anniversaire R-N-R Exhibition!!

37. End at the Beginning – Asobi Seksu [Aldo Sianturi]
Their music is dreamy at times but driving at other moments as well. This song really captures a moment in time. I hope I’m not fail to attach this on the current path.

So happy birthday The Block Rockin’ Beats! It’s been a wild ride so far. Thanks again for bringing me in there. I respect your uncompromising investment on music.

38. In My Life – Johnny Cash [Heru Wahyono]

39. Fade Into You – Mazzy Star [Arian13]
Haha.

Dari Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Death In June sampai ke Slowdive, gue cukup bingung memilih lagu. Setelah berpikir-pikir, gue akhirnya memilih “Fade Into You” dari Mazzy Star.

Lagu ini biasanya gue dengerin pas gue lagi senang—dan seringkali kalau sedang jatuh cinta. Justru jarang di saat sedih atau down. Di pemakaman gue, gue pengennya semua orang (teman-teman) bersenang-senang, merayakan kenangan kehidupan gue dulu bersama mereka. Dan terakhirnya, ditutup oleh lagu “Fade Into You”. mungkin akan “merusak” mood senang-senang sebelumnya, but then again, I’m pretty much of an asshole.

IMO, sang lagu sendiri adalah salah satu lagu sederhana terbaik sepanjang masa yang pernah diciptakan.

40. Downtown – Petula Clark [Indra Ameng]

“Downtown……downtown, you’re gonna be alright now”

Congratulations for the show. Happy birthday The Block Rockin’ Beats!

41. Sleeping Pills – Suede [Keke Tumbuan]
I love this song. Selain melodinya yang unconventional, haunting and beautiful; dengan trade mark vokal falsetto yang membuat kata-kata dalam liriknya semakin manis, dan tragis; kalau kita ikuti dengan indera pendengaran yang difokuskan ke suara gitarnya, it feels like there’s a kind of energy that tickles and caresses the ears – then down to the neck- stroking the back of the neck – down to the shoulders… Stays in the heart – where whenever the song gets played it will experience the same effect all over again! Banyak sekali lagu indah yang ada in our lifetime, dan beberapa yang lebih spesial dari lainnya, tapi buat gwe masih belum ada lagu lain yang bisa menciptakan efek yang sama in my mind, body, and soul, seperti lagu yang satu ini. Feels like it’s created just for me. Like they’ve studied my life, my DNA, my way of thinking… And made this song. That would be pretty awesome. Lagipula, even though it has a sadness in its melody, it’s followed by such playful guitar sounds that at the end it simply becomes a fantastic sounding piece of music… For the living and the dead... Gwe ga bisa guarantee bahwa lagu ini akan jadi pilihan akhir di saat gwe betul-betul harus mengambil keputusan suatu saat nanti (hopefully not too soon), knowing how much music I listen to and will get to know in the future, but for now… I would definitely go gently into that good night, or rage against the dying of the light, with this song.

“With sweet F.A. to do today, with sweet F.A. to do today…”

42. Is That All There Is? – Cristina [Steve Gamboa]
“Is That All There Is” was a song written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and recorded by Peggy Lee in 1969, but Cristina’s 1980 No Wave cover version with punked-out, rewritten lyrics is the perfect cynical goodbye song in my opinion. The words to this existentialist number are written from the point of view of a person who is disillusioned with events in life that are supposed unique experiences and are presented in the most completely irreverent, outrageously campy and utterly hilarious manner.

Perhaps not one to play at my actual funeral service, but definitely the song to kick the after party off.

“Is that all there is? / Is that all there is to love? / If that’s all there is / Then let’s go dancing. / Let’s break out the ludes / And have a ball..”

Selamat ulang tahun, BRB! Nuff respect…

43. Touch – Dave Grohl & Louise Post [Ade Putri]
I want to have this song to be played in my funeral simply because this is my most favorite song of all time. Been using the song for my ringtone for years and I’m pretty sure my closest friends know the song well enough. The song is light, and always cheers me up.

I will wait for you, honestly I am yours entirely.

No cries, no sorrows, because at the end we will meet again! *cling, cheers!*

44. Evidence – Faith No More [Ayip Budiman]
No special moment except making myself sure about the things before sleep…

Note: Not all the songs are available on Spotify. You might still be able to find it on YouTube.
