Domestic Groove: STEVIE ITEM

DOMESTIC GROOVE ~ Celeb's Chosen Seven is my biweekly column in The Beat (Jakarta) mag. Basically it's an interview via e-mail which focuses on small, intimate, domestic stuff; what Indonesia's public figures are really into, musically speaking. For the 24th edition I went upclose-and-personal with Stevie Item.

DOMESTIC GROOVE ~ Celeb’s Chosen Seven is my biweekly column in The Beat (Jakarta) mag. Basically it’s an interview via e-mail which focuses on small, intimate, domestic stuff; what Indonesia’s public figures are really into, musically speaking.

For the 24th edition I went upclose-and-personal with Stevie Item.

STEVIE ITEM
Guitarist, Music Producer

What music are you into at the moment?
“It Must Really Suck to Be Four Year Strong Right Now” by Four Year Strong.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it?
Back when I was still in 4th or 5th grade I bought the Jason Donovan & Kylie Minogue album, which contained the song “Especially For You”. It was a big hit at the time, so I went to the record store and bought the album. But as soon as I got out off the store I got mugged by the local punks. They took my money and the cassette, so I walked home on foot—I didn’t even have money to take a bus. So every time I listen to that song, it brings me back to that incident. I didn’t buy anymore albums until 6th grade, but by then I was totally into thrash metal. My first thrash metal album was Obituary’s Cause of Death, and then Sepultura’s Beneath the Remains. During that era, every time I saw albums with blood, gore, and evil-impression on the cover, I just bought it instantly without thinking twice.

What is your all-time favorite album? Why?
It has to be Faith No More’s Angel Dust or Megadeth’s Rust In Peace because I know most of the lyrics.

What was the worst record you ever purchased?
Big Dumb Face. It’s the side project band of Wes Borland—he’s the guitarist of Limp Bizkit.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate?
A better looking Rick Rubin or a healthier Tony Stark.

What song do you choose to start your weekend?
“Next Door, Dead Whore” by The Shattering.

And song you choose to end your weekend?
“Communications” by The Cardigans.

Stevie (known to his mates as”Tepi”) has just completed work in the studio for Andra and the Backbone’s upcoming fourth album. Meanwhile, he’s busy composing new songs with his death metal side project, Deadsquad. He has just started becoming a music producer for a new band which at the moment is in the process of recording their debut album.
