Domestic Groove: RAHMAH UMAYYA

DOMESTIC GROOVE ~ Celeb’s Chosen Seven is my biweekly column in The Beat (Jakarta) mag. Basically it’s an interview via e-mail which focuses on small, intimate, domestic stuff; what Indonesia’s public figures are really into, musically speaking. For the 19th edition I went upclose-and-personal with Rahmah Umayya.

RAHMAH UMAYYA
TV Presenter, MC

What music are you into at the moment?
Instrumental music by Dustin O’Halloran. He’s an indie pianist living in a small Berlin town who made it to Hollywood. My favorites are “Lumiere” and “We Move Lightly”. It takes me to a place I never thought existed every time I listen to it. Amazing.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it?
Candy Candy, the soundtrack. I bought it when I was still little. It’s the soundtrack of the most popular Japanese cartoon television series that aired in the 80’s in Indonesia. At that time the world was just like a garden of candy… So naive, stress-free. Oh, how I miss Candy Candy

What are your all-time favorite albums? Why?
My all time favorite albums would be anything from Simply Red, Michael Jackson, Sade, Feist, and Kings of Convenience. Never bored of them!

What was the worst record you ever purchased?
Had no experience of it.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate?
Maybe the ocean. Living happily with other fishes in the sea with so many beautiful coral reefs… I could see the sun, moon, stars, sky, pearls, sands, etc.

What music do you choose to start your weekend?
Anything from Matias Aguayo. Totally love it. It’s just “oh yeah…!!!”

And music you choose to end your weekend?
Of course “Roller Skate” by Matias Aguayo. The music is really cool. Have a listen so you know that I’m not lying! Very sexy, as well.

Rahmah is still as busy as ever, MCing, presenting her own TV show “Sarapan Pagi”, and being a “flowerpreneur” (a florist and entrepreneur at the same time) at her own flower shop. Luckily, the queen of breakfast TV took time out from busy schedule to give us a rundown of what tunes make her tick…
